As Caltech’s provost, Edward Stolper is responsible for the academic budget, faculty appointments, and promotions; serves as coordinator for curriculum development; and acts for the president in his absence. Melany Hunt, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Stephen Mayo, Bren Professor of Biology and Chemistry, are the Institute’s vice provosts. The vice provosts help oversee sponsored research policies and proposal authorizations; human subjects policies and procedures; the technology transfer program; the libraries; research compliance (including administering the Institute’s policies on scientific misconduct and conflict of interest); the Council on Undergraduate Education; accreditation; industrial relations; the ombudsman’s office; the Staff and Faculty Consultation Center; SURF and related programs; educational outreach; and the faculty handbook.
