
Melany L. Hunt is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering specializing in transport and mechanics in multiphase systems, including granular material flows, dense liquid-solid flows, fluidized beds, powders and porous materials.
She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1983, and her masters and doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1985 and 1987. She began at Caltech as an assistant professor in 1988, was promoted to associate professor in 1995 and professor in 2001. She received the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and has twice received the annual award for excellence in teaching from the Associated Students at Caltech. She served as Vice Chair of the Caltech Faculty from 2001-03, and as the Executive Officer of Mechanical Engineering from 2002-07. In addition, she has been involved in a range of Caltech committees looking at student life, curriculum and academics, undergraduate admissions, diversity, and child care.
